Poetry Workshop Series
Teen Loft, ImaginOn, Uptown Charlotte
In order to increase the level of writing and performance skills of our local youth poets, students will meet with our staff and other youth slam poets from the area. These workshops will focus on slam etiquette, expectations, writing and performance tips, and study of video performances.
Students will be able to share ideas, assist in group editing and critiques, and participate in group discussions designed to assist them in becoming better writers and performers.
Workshops will be held every Tuesday from 5:30-7:00 PM at ImaginOn, 300 E. 7th St., in downtown Charlotte.
BreatheINK Youth Poetry Open Mics
We are excited to offer a non-competitive event each month as an alternative to the pressure and formality of our poetry slam series. These open mics are hosted by our youth poets and are open to all forms of creativity. Even if you are not a poet but you do sing, dance, play an instrument, paint, or any other form of creative expression, then please come out and share your gifts with us. And if you just want to come and be entertained by the most talented teens in the area that's okay too.

Youth Poetry Slam Series
It is our goal to encourage all local teen poets to aspire to the highest levels of creativity and self expression through the art form of performance poetry. One of the ways we seek to achieve this ideal is through artistic performance competitions. Our slam season will allow students to create the highest levels of spoken word in a competitive format as they attempt to earn their way onto the 2018 Charlotte Youth Poetry Slam Team. This team will receive expert training, perform in several venues across the region, and represent our area at the Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Festival in Chicago, IL.

breatheINK Youth Slam Team
The top six scoring poets from our Grand Slam Finals will represent Charlotte, NC at the 2017 Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Festival in San Francisco, CA. These students will practice multiple times per week receiving one-on-one instruction from national level performance poets from April through July and perform in many venues throughout the Mecklenburg County area. Subjects that will be concentrated on will be slam strategies, perfecting performance, writing and performing group poems, booking shows and learning how to be a professional touring poet, and group editing/critiquing. This is an experience of a lifetime that will help shape the level of artists these young adults will become.
